Koi wa Groovy x2, Yuna Ito’s twelfth single since her debut smash hit ENDLESS STORY and her fourth single since her last hit Mahaloha finds her treading similar ground from stuck on you back in 2006. The lead track is a fun, winter reggae-inspired track with beautiful vocals and adorably catchy chorus. The real question is not whether or not the song is good, but it is, the real question is why the Japanese pop idol worshipers don’t like her upbeat songs. Her vocals are just as strong, just as passionate (well, passionate maybe isn’t the best word) but the song is A-class. The girl can definitely sing an amazing ballad but she has been typecast as only a ballad singer and that will only hurt her. But if she wants to have a career, I would go back to ballads because a horrid total of 4,650 copies is, well, horrific for a girl accustomed to selling into the 40,000s. The B-side, [真冬の星座] or [Midwinter Constellation] is a nondescript mid-tempo treatise on exactly how to not be a big deal and the Hawaiian mix of her last single, Miss you is nice if you plan on taking a nap on the beach. Overall, not a bad single but she’s not going to have a record deal much longer if she keeps this up.
