泣きたいなら
[Nakitai Nara]
[If I Want to Cry]
Lyrics: 根本要 [Nemoto Kaname] / Music: 松井五郎 [Matsui Gorou] / Arrangement: 中野雄太 [Yuta Nakano]

A lonely guitar strums and picks gently as the song opens and soon tristful violins enter and add more emotion to the instrumental. A drum kit with soft chimes completes the sad atmosphere with more melancholic drama. Shimatani Hitomi’s vocals are melancholy and sentimental with hollow high notes and gracefully charactistic slides. The song has a slight Spanish air to it, especially at the chorus. The melody is sweeping and stays in an octave’s range (8 notes). It’s nothing spectacular and nothing I haven’t heard from her before.

[Kuchizuke Shiyou]
[Let’s Kiss]
Lyrics & Music: 葛谷葉子 [Kuzutani Youko] / 阿部尚徳 [Hisanori Abe?]

With a dolce piano and an unexpected accordion*. Shimatani has been known over the past decade for putting out interesting combinations of instruments and genres. This is a very pretty and not-all-together perfect pairing, but one that gives the song such a different dimension and makes it gorgeous for how its faults coincide with its strengths. On her side, Hitomi does a sweet job with the melody. Her voice is very cute and airy.

At this point, I would hope that Shimatani Hitomi would pull something truly spectacular out of her ample bag of tricks at avex, but she still seems to be releasing boring, uninspiring work. These are excellent song writers she’s working with though, Yuta Nakano worked heavily with both Ayumi Hamasaki and Koda Kumi while Hisanori Abe has worked with Kinki Kids. She needs an up-tempo dance number or a power ballad and a dorama tie-in, anything but these very sadly charting singles.
