夢が咲く春
[Yume ga Saku Haru]
[Spring of Blossoming Dreams]
Lyrics: Mai Kuraki / Music & Arrangement: Akihito Tokunaga

Mai Kuraki unleashes the 70s on us with a vengeance with her latest release. Yuma ga Saku Haru recalls the era directly before disco with a slight hint of the beginnings of electronica with some soft, understated keyboarding but brings funk to the foreground: guitar whines in and out as violins strike throughout. I can’t find a translation of the actual song, so, I guess it’s not sad. It seems rather peppy and altogether like Miss Kuraki is having fun. Her vocals are breathy without bordering on Britney and she successfully sounds like a pre-DEEP RIVER Utada Hikaru. Her sound is lighter though, with a bit more sensuality.

You and Music and Dream
Lyrics: Mai Kuraki / Music & Arrangement: Akihito Tokunaga

A piano keys grandly into the softly humming, almost inaudible, synthesizer. Strings add, as do some wooden rhythm instruments. Much mellower than the previous song, it also edges very, very close to cheesy. Her English might have been better. The part of this song that is actually beautiful is Kuraki’s voice. Her voice feels like a soprano version of [Utada Hikaru]. Her high notes are a bit more breathy but they also are blessedly left alone. No digital effects to really speak of. Her voice is full of character and emotion and even has some very Asian runs, similar to those in [alan]’s music.

Overall, the single was pleasant though it definitely wasn’t genius of any kind. Where the first song was full of flair and energy, the other song lagged and became cliché. Mai Kuraki had better step her game up. People wait in line to be a famous singer. She’s going to have to fight her way back to top. Of course, that will be rather hard with Utada Hikaru steamrolling everything in front of you. Good luck, though.
