人魚姫 (Ningyo-hime) (Mermaid Princess)
Lyrics: Koda Kumi
Music & Arrangement: Miki Watanabe

“Ningyo-hime” certainly lives up to its initial descrpition as an explosive rock number. Heavily distorted electric guitars roar in as the drums and her gritty vocals drive the song forward. The delivery of the lyrics are absolutely perfect, all at once gritty, sexy, mad, and generally amazing. I fricken’ love this song. I listen to it when I’m really upset or get tired of all the stupid drivers in Florida… lol…

I’ll be there
Lyrics: Koda Kumi
Music: Shintaro Hagiwara
Arrangement: tasuku

“I’ll be there” is a mid-tempo pop ballad with beautiful lyrics and lots of acoustic guitar and synthetic backing. Koda Kumi’s vocals are paired very well with the guitars and drums and the entire song is very impressive. Overall, it’s very sweet.

Lyrics: Yo Taira (Digz Inc.)
Music & Arrangement: STY (Digz Inc.)

This song is dirty as hell. I mean, I love Koda and I really like awesome dance songs (and this one is definitely in my top ten club bangers of all time…) but the lyrics… are… well… they’re just “dirrty”… The music, *ahem*, is really fun with an Arabic feel. It incorpotates heavy bass, electronic beats, and some sort of snake-charmer noise… it’s really cool.

With Your Smile
Lyrics: Koda Kumi
Music: Toru Watanabe
Arrangement: h-wonder

Ah, yes, another signature Koda Kumi song…
“With Your Smile” is a sugary sweet, synth-laden, pop number that is very up-tempo. I really think it’s fun and it was one of the first songs I heard by her. The chorus has a really pretty melody and you can’t help but sing along.

Overall, this single was very, very good… bordering on excellent. The variety of musical styles in this single is amazing and the videos that accompanied them were all very interesting.

  1. […] bass and we’re off into distorted, almost beyond recognition, electric guitar. The song is 人魚姫 (Ningyo-hime) inspired, but with a more reggaeton feel. Hip-hip is probably at it’s heart, […]

  2. […] A bit of a Turkish inspired dance track that more than makes up for the mediocrity of ‘Last Angel’. With a high melody and cool harmonies, ‘甘い罠’ is one of the hottest tracks on Kingdom. The beat is low and seems to pull your body back and forth, like a snake charmer. It’s an updated, streamlined version of JUICY. […]
