永遠 / Universe / Believe in LOVE
[永遠], or [Forever], is a early ’90s throwback track with sparkling synth and a keyboarded, R&B background. The vocals are a bit nasal, but it is BoA, and overall a nice song but nothing worth much in the grand scheme of JPop these days. Also, the song tends to repeat itself so many times that it becomes tiring and annoying. The song is a solidly mediocre ballad from Kwon.
[Universe] which features VERBAL from m-flo and Crystal Kay sounds like any throwaway track from Britney’s Circus and is written by Bloodshy & Avant, which explains the similarities between this and Circus. Overall, mediocre at best. Deep bass and electronic whizzing back BoA and Crystal Kay as they sing. One problem (at least for BoA), Crystal Kay outsings BoA by a long shot, her voice cuts through the track and makes her own path while BoA becomes lost in the music. Her nasalness is finally reaching unbearable levels by this point and the entire song seems to be drugged by it into a slow monotonous electronic dirge.
[Believe in LOVE] which features BoA is an acoustic version of Ravex’s new single. The song is pretty with, you guessed it, acoustic guitars. BoA sings well except for some misplaced slides and cracks and makes like the whole thing sound like an Unplugged session on MTV that is going roughly. Although, if BoA hadn’t murdered it, the song is very pretty and the lyrics are pleasant.
As a plus to the single, there is a mega mix of BoA’s past five years that features her worst runs and her best choruses. Is anyone actually paying attention to what their using to promote this girl?
BoA, get it together. Your American stuff sounds good, don’t loose Japan in the process…
